Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare for task
  • Identify task requirements from work documentation and instructions
  • Identify quality requirements in accordance with workplace practices
  • Observe work health and safety requirements, including personal protection and safe handling requirements
  • Select tools and equipment to meet task requirements, check they are safe and functional, and report any faults to supervisor
  • Check that furniture item and materials meet task requirements, including quality requirements
       
Element: Prepare surface and materials for finishing process
  • Check that surfaces are free of contamination and are ready for finishing process according to workplace procedures and industry standards
  • Identify products with surface or other faults and report and repair according to workplace procedures and industry standards
  • Prepare materials for surface finishing in readiness for application
  • Apply stain to timber surfaces in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures and standards
  • Seal stained surface with polish using mop brush, blender or swooge
  • Lightly sand sealed surface to make smooth
  • Apply wood filler or sanding sealer in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
  • Seal filled-in surface with oil varnish in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures and standards
       
Element: Apply finishing material
  • Apply finishing material in accordance with manufacturer specifications until required build is achieved
  • Cut back finishing material to remove surface defects or foreign material in accordance with workplace procedures and standards
  • Burnish surface with fine steel wool and lubricating oil to achieve even sheen
  • Check, clear and store equipment and any unused materials in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Clean work area and safely dispose of waste including wood filler and lubricating oil rags, showing regard for spontaneous combustion risks, in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental standards
  • Complete required workplace records

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
